Hysterectomy in Silver Spring, MD

Laparoscopic Hysterectomy refers to removal of the uterus through small incisions in the abdomen. There are several types of Laparoscopic Hysterectomy. Our surgeons routinely perform all of the following methods. In each of the following cases, the fallopian tubes may be also removed. In some cases, the ovaries are also removed. Our surgeons will have a discussion with you regarding your individual medical condition(s) and which procedure is recommended for you.

Types of Hysterectomies:

Total Laparoscopic Hysterectomy (TLH). This refers to removal of the entire uterus and cervix using small incisions in the abdomen. The specimen is removed through the vagina.

Laparoscopic Supracervical Hysterectomy (LSH). This refers to removal of the main body of the uterus using small incisions in the abdomen. A small bikini line incision is made to remove the specimen. The cervix is not removed. Leaving the cervix intact allows for continued support of the remaining pelvic organs, including the bladder, rectum and vagina.

Laparoscopic Assisted Vaginal Hysterectomy (LAVH). Similar to TLH, this refers to removal of the entire uterus and cervix using small incisions in the abdomen. The specimen is removed through the vagina. Compared to TLH, more of the procedure is done through the vagina.
